Second oldest tune on Orphans. Sometime in 1987. Mike Weaver, who'd played in a band with me in Denver, earlier in the year at Tech School, offered to record me playing a then-unnamed instrumental of mine. Basic F Minor guitar piece, three or four chords, nothing special. Having no drums at our disposal he offered to have his drum machine do that part for us - and programmed the beat you hear here. A very cool beat.
After recorded the keys, drum machine, and the first take of the guitar part, I asked him if we could do the guitar over again. The idea was for there to be a bass guitar part on track four. But for some reason Mike recorded the second guitar part on the empty track, and then played the thing back to me. I decided the thing was good with two guitar lines, a keyboard part, and Mike's nifty drum machine beat.
Mike suggested the name 'Spanish Song' and it stuck. There have been at least three other/newer versions of this song in my arsenal, but the first is my favorite.
